BACKGROUND: In patients with severe forms of Parkinson's disease (PD), deep brain stimulation (DBS) commonly targets the subthalamic nucleus (STN). Recently, the mean 3-D Morel-Atlas of the basal ganglia and the thalamus was introduced. It combines information contained in histological data from ten post-mortem brains.
The term basal ganglia usually includes the striatum, globus pallidus, substantia nigra and the subthalamic nucleus. Basal ganglia disease may cause a number of movement disorders. This article reviews central elements of normal basal ganglia function and discusses how basal ganglia dysfunction may give rise to various motor disturbances.
In terms of anatomy, it is the major part of the subthalamus. As suggested by its name, the subthalamic nucleus is located ventral to the thalamus. The subthalamic nucleus is the sole excitatory structure within the basal ganglia. Given its central position influencingmany basal ganglia nuclei, it is likely to play an important role in the processing that is performed by the basal ganglia. In this thesis a theoretical analysis of the subthalamic nucleus is presented.
